I love the blog widget. I had been waiting for it to launch my blog, it’s great. Just one more question however regarding tags. If I add #hashtags to the blog body itself, will these be searchable via Google? Will tags be a future feature?
@Victoria_Hansen Each individual post is indexed by Google and shows up in search results.
So, if you add hashtags to the post text, they’ll be indexed too.
As for the tags as a future feature, could you please elaborate on what you mean?
Many popular blogs utilize built-in tag systems to enhance navigation and organization. Examples include blogs like HubSpot’s blog, which uses tags for topics like “inbound marketing” or “email marketing” within their broader categories. TechCrunch, a technology and startup news blog, also uses tags to categorize articles by industry, company, or event. Greatist, a health and fitness blog, effectively uses tags to organize content like recipes, workouts, or mental health advice.
Using both categories and tags keeps your blog organised and user-friendly—categories provide broad structure, while tags offer specific detail. This makes it easier for readers to find related content and improves your site’s navigation and search visibility. Using only categories can quickly become cluttered and confusing.
Example Scenario: A Food Blog
Blog Topic: You write recipes and food-related content—like “Easy Dinners,” “Vegetarian Meals,” “Meal Prep,” and “Gluten-Free Baking.”
Using Only Categories
You might create the following categories:
- Breakfast
- Lunch
- Dinner
- Vegetarian
- Gluten-Free
- Meal Prep
- Baking
- Easy Recipes
Now imagine you’re publishing a post titled: “Easy Gluten-Free Vegetarian Lasagna for Dinner”
Which category does it go in?
You’re forced to pick one, or awkwardly multi-categorize it across 3–4 categories:
- Dinner
- Vegetarian
- Gluten-Free
- Easy Recipes
Problems:
Repetition – Many posts will appear in multiple categories, making navigation feel repetitive.
Overlapping Purpose – Categories start to look like tags (e.g. “Easy Recipes”, “Vegetarian”).
Cluttered Sidebar/Menu – Too many categories dilute their meaning and overwhelm the reader.
Using Categories and Tags
Now you define broad categories and more specific tags:
Categories:
- Recipes
- Food Tips
- Reviews
Tags (for the lasagna post):
- Dinner
- Gluten-Free
- Vegetarian
- Easy
- Pasta
- Italian
Benefits:
- Categories stay broad and purposeful (e.g. “Recipes”).
- Tags are flexible and descriptive, helping users find similar content without bloating your main navigation.
- Readers can click on the “Vegetarian” tag to find all vegetarian meals, regardless of category.
I apprecaite in the current layout, Categories appear above in the blog, but this could get very untidy and messy very quickly. Enabling Categories, (and tags should they be included in the future) to appear in either the left or right sidebar, would present a better and more cohesive visual appeal and enable more categories to be added. Just something to think about.
Hi there, @Victoria_Hansen
Thanks a lot for your detailed response!
I am glad to say that both categories and tags are already available in the app. Please check this post for more details - Blog: Introducing categories, tags + 2 new features! 🚀
Hi Max, I’m aware but it’s where they appear on the widgit I’m looking at now. I’ve submitted another query aout front end design using CSS and JS, to see if it’s possible to adjust the layout slightly. Also, because I need a html editor for my posts, I plan to use the blog widgit to link to the actual post on my website. Bit of double handling but it will give me more scope for post content. Thanks for your reply.
Do I get it right that the existing tags functionality works fine for you, but you’d like to display them in the sidebar instead of the post bottom?
Hi Max, I havent tested anything yet because I’m trying to finalise layout before I start writing posts and testing on my site. Categories and tags however, need to be clearly visible both on the post and ideally in the sidebar so people can search either quickly, not just from the bottom of each post. That’s something I’m still toying with.
Got it, thanks!
Currently, it’s impossible to display tags this way, but I’ve added this idea to the Wishlist on your behalf - Show tags in the sidebar.
If this request gets more votes, it might be considered in the future
