I second this. We use google calendar pretty aggressively and I’ve been pretty happy with the calendar widget and feature set; however, not being able to filter event_types are a bit annoying.

There isn’t a specific number, as it depends on the widget - some are more popular than others. For the Event Calendar, we typically start considering requests once they reach around 60-70 upvotes :slight_smile:

Sadly this feature is key for our organization’s Google Calendar (we are not going to duplicate efforts by putting events into another program) and I moved forward without realizing filtering wasn’t available for synced Google Calendars. Such a bummer.

for real tho, what about editing an imported event so that an event type or tag can even be assigned?

OK, I know that’s another layer of integration between google and the elfsight platform but not having it means that end-users can’t filter events beyond the date unless widget admins enter them manually which, for calendars with many events, made the google cal integration worth it in the first place… Am I missing something?

OK, what about this: is there a script that I can add to the description of the google calendar event that will assign that event type and tag value?

The problem is that while your widget provides robust filtering, the Google Calendar API does not expose a native method to pass this structured metadata. This forces users into a suboptimal workflow of manual event creation, which negates the value of the integration. This is a common challenge that other software has successfully addressed.

I propose a solution that would be a game-changer for your users: Enhance your Google Calendar integration to parse and extract structured metadata directly from the event description field.

Proposed Mechanism:

The same way it does with images, it could scan the event description for a predefined syntax. For example, a YAML front matter block at the end could be a powerful, user-friendly solution:

Benefits of this approach:

  1. Increases the value proposition of the Event Calendar widget - an even better selling best-seller.

  3. Future-proofs the widget, allowing it to adapt to other forms of custom metadata without significant UI changes.

  4. Maintains a clean user interface as the configuration is handled within the user’s source of truth (Google Calendar).

We cannot but agree that this feature is really important, but since this limitation comes from Google,there’s no way to bypass it at the moment. I’m really sorry about that!

@Cole_Devoy, I have to say that we don’t have a specific vote threshold to start working on the feature, but it’s true that the more votes it gets, the higher the chance it will be considered.

As for the workaround you suggested, this definitely makes sense. However, the main challenge in implementing it is finding a way to create an intuitive, universal format that works across all supported languages in the widget.

Anyway, we’ll have this idea in mind and inform you here in case of any changes :wink:

How about implementing this by allowing the syncing of multiple Google calendars, with each Google calendar able to be assigned to a different event type?

So if I were a sports team and wanted 2 event types for home and away games, I would create 2 different calendars in google, then be able to select them in the widget and assign them to event types.

Interesting idea, thanks for sharing! Currently, it’s impossible to connect multiple calendars with one widget, but this idea is already on the Wishlist :slightly_smiling_face:
