Show past events under "dates" dropdown menu, but not on the page below upcoming events

We want our past events to show up under the “date” dropdown menu so users can navigate via the calendar and browse paste events. However, when past events are shown, they also show up on the page just below our the upcoming events.

Is there a way to have the past events not take up space on our page, but still be accessible to users via the “dates” dropdown menu?
