Reorder Gallery by moving photos in the Preview Window

Allow drag-and-drop reordering directly in the preview, supporting multi-image selection for reordering, and possibly offering larger sidebar thumbnail options.

My slow downs with reordering photos in the list:

  1. Sidebar Thumbnails Are Small: In galleries with similar images (e.g., photo shoots of real estate or remodeling projects), tiny sidebar thumbnails make it difficult to distinguish subtle details between shots without constantly cross-referencing the main preview.

  2. Unsynchronized Scroll Tracking when Reordering: Dragging an image on the sidebar from the very bottom to the very top of the list is functionally smooth and fast. However, major position shifts aren’t visually followed with the preview. Let’s say that the preview window is scrolled to the top of the gallery, and you are reordering photos at the bottom of the list, the preview does not auto-scroll to follow the changes below. There is a disconnection between the sidebar / preview.

  3. Reordering Efficiency: Reordering photos one by one takes a significant amount of time when organizing large shoots or regrouping projects.

Proposed Solutions / Suggestions

  • Direct Canvas Drag-and-Drop (Primary Request):

Allow users to click and drag photos directly within the large canvas preview window to reorder them visually. This would eliminate issues 1 and 2 if possible to implement.

  • Multi-Select Capability for Reordering:

Add the ability to select multiple photos to reorder groups of images at once.

  • Synchronized Sidebar-to-Canvas Scroll Tracking (Alternative / Secondary Request):

If reordering in the list panel remains the primary method, auto-scroll the main canvas preview to follow the active photo in real time as it moves during long-distance drags.

  • Expanded Sidebar View / Adjustable Thumbnails (Optional):

An option to toggle larger sidebar thumbnails or enable a hover-to-zoom feature to make identifying photos easier without relying solely on file names.

I suppose distinctive file naming would help with issue #1 on my end, but I think any of these suggestions could be a user friendly update for everyone!

Hi there, @swm :waving_hand:

A huge thank you for such a detailed explanation!

This is a great idea and we’ll try to think it over in the future, especially if more users upvote it :slightly_smiling_face:
